Last week I discussed the history and the wonderful benefits of Aromatherapy. Today I would like to share some easy and effective applications of Aromatherapy.
The most common methods of application of Aromatherapy are topical and inhalation. When applying EO’s to skin it is important to use a carrier oil to absorb the potency and to protect the skin. Some essential oils can be applied directly to the skin such as True lavender and Tea tree oil. Caution should be used when applying and using oils. It is important to start with the least therapeutic amount .
According to leading Aroma therapists Nerys Purchon and Lora Cantele it is recommended to use a 1.5% dilution or 3 drops per 2 tsp. or 10 ml of carrier oil. The most common carrier oils used are grape seed or sweet almond oil. Sometimes specific oils may be recommended for special blends.
Essential oils may also be added to creams and bases such as Aloe Vera. The most common types of EO’s used are: True Lavender, Tea Tree, Roman Chamomile, Lemon and Geranium.
Lavender is the most popular and one of the safest oils to use. Some of the common uses are for stress, insomnia, depression burns and insect bites.
Many essential oils have anti microbial properties and therefore may be used to clean counter tops diluted in water and applied to the skin to decrease irritation, redness and to prevent infection. EO’s should always be purchased from a reputable source and should be organic.

Massage Oils and lotions Full Body: 4 drops of EO or blend per 2 tsp. (10ml) carrier oil or lotion Localized application: 6 drops EO or blend in 1 tsp. (5ml) carrier oil or application
Compresses 4-6 drops of EO or blend in water (regardless of size of compress) 4-6 drops of EO or blend in 1 tsp. (5ml) carrier oil or lotion
Lotions 30-40 drops of EO or blend per 20 tsp. (10 ml) cream (0.5%)
Facial Steams 1-2 drops of EO or blend in 3-4 cu of hot water- (This can be done in the bathroom sink with towel draped over head).
Baths 4-6 drops EO or blend (depending on age) in 1 tsp. (5ml) milk, honey or liquid castile soap
Gargle or Mouth wash 2-3 drops of EO in 1 cup of water
Inhalations 1-2 drops of EO or blend on a tissue/ or cotton ball- this can be placed in a pillow case to promote sleep 3-5 drops of EO in a diffuser or tabletop vaporizer 5-8 drops of EO in a large room vaporizer
Personal Inhaler sticks 21 drops of EO on wick and place in inhaler-portable
Shampoos, conditioners, shower gels and bubble baths 12-50 drops of EO or blend per 1 cup (250 ml’s) Start with lower quantities of oil, then increase the quantity as you get used to it
